I mean you can set Windows DPI scaling down the single % point, it's great. Then it should be hidpi on external display too. Then you can mirror the exterior display to internal display in display settings. Use SwitchresX set the internal resolution to the new one. Kind of embarrassing that Windows has completely lapped Apple in terms of good sharp UI at flexible scaling levels. So download new version SwitchresX, add a custom resolution like 5120x2144 into internal display, remember to save it and restart the mac. EDIT: This is incorrect SwitchResX allows you to choose resolutions with OR without the notch area. If you select this resolution you get the full resolution without the notch bar as well. 4k HiDPI is working correctly on the 4k monitor that is connected via Thunderbolt. Neither display options in System Preferences or SwitchResX is able to make it work. Unscaled it is working correctly and is a crisp 1440p. As a workaround I run them scaled 3360 x 1890 and then set my browser to permanent 90% zoom level. The highest non-HiDPI resolution in SwitchResX is actually 3024x1890, which is 74 pixels less than the actual screen resolution of 3024x1964. It's blurry, like it is just scaling the resolution selected to 1440p rather than doing HiDPI. Imagine my surprise when I found out my 27" 4K screens that look incredibly sharp on Windows at 163ppi are actually in the "bad zone" for Macs, and look bad at native resolution. Check out these blog posts (, part 2: ) for more info on how this stuff works. If I'm not mistaken, your monitor is around 109 PPI, which isn't really that high compared to the internal screen (~250ppi), and firmly in the "non-Retina" UI elements zone. Is it 1280×800 HiDPI (smooth text) or 1280×800 scaled up to 2560×1600 (blocky, pixelated) See if the 2560×1600 option exists in SwitchResX grspider 0 on 27-08-2021 I’m only getting 1280×800 scaled to 2560×1600. SwitchResX can let you to create new resolutions or customize existing ones, to get a perfect screen experience. * In general I've found Macs just suck at DPI scaling. For me, this tweak helped a lot with clarity but I initially didn't think it was working because I didn't know you had to log out. * Remember to log out and log back in after you set font smoothing to 0. Bypass Apples restrictions, safely and quickly. * Is the monitor running in RGB or YPbPr? With M1 Macs some monitors are getting forced into YPbPr mode and fonts look worse because of it.
